Cassell Associates is renovating the Altgeld Hall structure which
dates back to 1895 as part of Northern Illinois Universitys
Centennial. The exterior of the building is restored with new windows,
doors and detailing to stay in context with the original architecture
of the facade. Portions of the interior such as corridors and the
auditorium will be restored to original character. The interior
of the building is being renovated for use by administrative staff
including the university president. The building will house a visitors
center, a new technology center and an art gallery for traveling
exhibits as well as the Universitys collection of art. |

Northern
Illinois Universitys most prominent architectural feature
is undergoing a complete renovation. Where appropriate, key historical
areas are being restored to their original grandeur. The Castle
is a 130,000 sq. ft. limestone edifice which will house many of
the Universitys administrative offices including the President,
several Vice Presidents, and the Board of Trustees. It will also
offer a large Art Gallery and an Auditorium with reception rooms.
This will be accomplished through the following measures: the restoration
of the historically significant building exterior; redeveloping
the building entrance and lobby to provide a high impact, high profile
exterior and interior entrance consistent with the image of the
building; provide improvements to the building pedestrian circulation
systems to eliminate the present confusing circulation patterns,
improve life safety, provide for accessibility and improve the building
image; and replace building service systems which provide for heating,
ventilation, and air conditioning, electrical power and lighting,
plumbing fire protection, security and communication.
