Originally constructed in 1968, the current Addison Public Library building is now inadequate for the space and technology needs of a 21st century library. A 1993 addition to the existing building further exacerbated the Library’s space problems, creating five levels of largely unconnected spaces.

The new Addison Public Library will be a marriage of traditional library service and architecture with the best features and elements of a 21st century library building. Situated on the southeast corner of the Village of Addison municipal campus, the new Library design recalls the traditional forms and elements of the adjacent Village Hall while simultaneously making a bold, contemporary visual statement. The Library is the cornerstone of the Village of Addison Town Center Redevelopment Plan, an ambitious undertaking that will restore a sense of place and a true “downtown” to a village that currently lacks a downtown area. |

The new three-level, 54,500 sf building features a “Wireless Internet Café” at the entrance and a large meeting room configured for use outside of normal Library operating hours. Inside the Library, circulation and the Children’s Library occupy the main level. . A two-story tall “reading tree” serves as a focal point of the library’s public areas, anchoring a play and reading area on the first floor in the Children’s Library. Stairs and an elevator from the central lobby ascend to the second floor, where Adult Services and Young Adult collections are located. The dynamic forms of the building’s exterior create interesting and intimate reading areas throughout the second floor. The third floor houses administrative functions, a conference/board room, and mechanical space. |
The new building is designed to meet baseline LEED-NC certification requirements. Because the Library will occupy a site on the existing Village campus, site disturbance will be kept to an absolute minimum. Elements such as a garden roof reduce the amount of energy required for cooling and reduce the amount of stormwater runoff, while extensive use of daylighting throughout will create inspiring places to read and reduce electricity consumption. |
