| This
new 37,000 Square Foot library building is on the site of the
original library in historic downtown Flossmoor. The triangular
site is adjacent to the commuter rail line station and acts as a
transition between Flossmoor's downtown and adjacent residential
areas. The BCA Library Design Team has given great attention to
producing a building image that is not only good architecture, but
is also visually integrated into the existing, historic downtown.
We believe that it is our duty to present the citizens of Flossmoor
with a building that "belongs" in their community. To
achieve this, BCA conducted public input sessions and worked closely
with Library staff, Board, the Flossmoor City Council and the Village
Appearance Commission.
Many of the buildings in Flossmoor's
downtown were erected in the 1920's and are done in a Tudor, half-timber
style. Village trustees asked that the new library reflect the
historic downtown in material and scale as well as by using a
traditional vocabulary. They asked that the library look "like
it had always been there". The result is BCA's contemporary
interpretation of Flossmoor's existing downtown. The library also functions as a cultural center for art, lectures
and music as well as a comfortable place for reading, research
and exploration.
