The LaGrange public library had a dilemma; the library needed to expand but the existing site was completely filled by the library and its associated parking. Adjacent properties were not available and few, if any other potential building sites were available within the Village.

The library site was also on the border of LaGrange’s downtown shopping area and a historic residential district.. The BCA design team felt that any architectural solution would have to respect each of these established contexts.

BCA analyzed the characteristics of LaGrange’s business district and adjacent historic residential district. To ensure that the new library would fit seamlessly into the community, we drew upon the proportions and materials featured in LaGrange’s early 20th century commercial buildings and the adjacent historic district for the library’s facade.

The north elevation features a covered walkway that will protect library patrons as they make their way to the library from the adjacent parking lot.

The final design will not only respect LaGrange’s historic architecture but will provide Village residents with a true 21st century library.
